Three hours later he wasn’t as confident about his solution as he ate his breakfast. He should have thought about the possibility of another wedding. He always liked a party, but knew that this could complicate things. His family liked to do things a certain way. He knew they wouldn’t take kindly to a surprise wedding they weren’t in control of. Especially Edgar. He called James.

“I’m getting married again,” he told him.

“What about Toyin?” his brother said alarmed.

“I’m getting married to her. Her family wants a wedding.”

James started to laugh.

“They’re planning it for next Saturday. In two weeks to be precise.”

James laughed harder.

“I’m glad you find this so funny.”

“More than you know.”

“It’s going to be a double wedding with her cousin.”

“Are you making this up?”

“No.”

“Does she have a large family?”

“I don’t know that yet. I need a favor.”

“Don’t worry,” James said. “We’ll be there. Wouldn’t miss it for the world. I’ll take lots of pictures.”

Jackson frowned. “That’s not why I’m calling.”

“What do you want?”

“I thought you should break the news to Edgar.”

James’s good humor disappeared. He swore. “I forgot I haven’t told him yet.”

“You can tell him now.”

“Which part? That you’re already married or that you’re getting married again in two weeks?”

“Both.”

“Why don’t you tell him?”

“Because you say things better than I do.”

“No,” James said unmoved by the flattery, “it because you don’t want to do it.”

“That too.”

“He’ll want to meet her first,” James said.

“There won’t be enough time before the wedding.”

“He’ll make time.”

Jackson nodded. “I know.”

“And if he doesn’t like her…”

“He won’t have a choice. He’ll have to.”

“I’ll see what I can do. I can manage to stall for a week and keep him in the dark. I’ll let others know it’s for the best considering his health. But after that, you’d both better be prepared.”

“For what?”

James’s tone turned ominous. “The summons.”
